Vermont Academy Names Michael Peller as Next Head of School

The Vermont Academy Board of Trustees is delighted to announce the appointment of Michael Peller as the school’s next Head of School, effective July 1, 2025.
Michael Peller brings a wealth of experience, a deep understanding of independent education, and an entrepreneurial spirit to Vermont Academy. During his campus visit, Mike made an outstanding impression on students, faculty, staff, and parents alike. Feedback highlighted his inspiring leadership, warm and collegial demeanor, keen insights, and collaborative approach. Enthusiasm for his ability to guide Vermont Academy into its next promising chapter was unanimous.

Mike grew up immersed in the world of independent schools on the campus of Northfield Mount Hermon (MA), where his parents were both faculty members. He began his career in education as the youngest-ever Math Department Chair at Holderness School (NH).  His leadership journey continued at The White Mountain School (NH) and several innovative day schools in California. Most recently, he has been instrumental in establishing the upper school at Hillbrook School (CA), demonstrating his creative and forward-thinking leadership.

The Vermont Academy community showcased its hallmark warmth, hospitality, and commitment to the school’s mission throughout the search process. Mike and his wife, Kelsey, expressed their excitement about joining this vibrant community and raising their two children in an environment that so strongly aligns with their values.

“From the moment I set foot on campus in December, I felt an immediate sense of belonging, a deep admiration for VA’s rich history, and an equally powerful excitement for the journey ahead. As I walked around campus, I saw students embodying confidence, purpose, humility, and joy—a community where care for one another is at the heart of daily life. My visit left me with a sense of optimism and conviction for the future of Vermont Academy,” Peller noted in his message to the community. (The full message can be found here).

The Board extends its gratitude to current VA Head of School Dr. Jennifer L. Zaccara, whose visionary leadership over the past eight years has strengthened and enriched Vermont Academy. Dr. Zaccara’s dedication to "The Vermont Academy Way" has paved the way for this exciting new chapter, and the school is poised to thrive under Mike's guidance.

“Mike’s collaborative spirit, passion for education, and entrepreneurial mindset are exactly what Vermont Academy needs as we continue to grow and excel,” said Search Committee Chair and Vermont Academy Board of Trustees Chair Jeremy Herbert '99. “We are thrilled to welcome him and his family into the VA community.”

Please join us in celebrating the beginning of this exciting new era for Vermont Academy as we warmly welcome Mike, Kelsey, and their family to our cherished community.
